In February 2018, Roy Cronacher achieved something only one other angler has managed to achieve: A Billfish Royal Slam on 20-pound-test IGFA tippet class using fly tackle (“on fly”).
A Black Marlin was the final fish Cronacher needed for the slam of nine billfish species. Cronacher caught and released the Black Marlin on his 9700 Mako reel while fishing in Exmouth, Australia, with Captain Jono Shales.
By catching this Black Marlin on fly, Cronacher became only the second fly angler in the world to register and document with the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) a Billfish Royal Slam on fly. The nine species included in the Slam are Pacific Blue Marlin, Pacific Sailfish, Atlantic Blue Marlin, Atlantic Sailfish, Short Billed Spearfish, Broad Billed Swordfish, White Marlin, Striped Marlin and the Black Marlin.
To receive distinction for a Slam caught on fly tackle, all of the species must be caught on fly tackle according to IGFA rules. Not only did Cronacher catch the final fish of the Slam with his Mako 9700, all nine billfish were caught using his Mako.
